Theoretical content: Camille Paglia

Whilst conducting some research for my project, I came across a writer called Camille Paglia. In 2004 she wrote a journal article for Art Documentation named ‘The Cruel Mirror: Body Type and Body Image as Reflected in Art. Here I came across some interesting ideas that seem to fit perfectly with the project I have in mind.

The main object of my project is focused on societies obsession with beauty; and how this makes girls feel a certain inadequacy towards their body image.

Paglia, like me, wrote this article expressing the woes of beauty, where she drew her ideas based on famous writings ad films in history. She claimed that the title of the article was inspired by Walt Disney’s animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), ‘Where the elegant witch-queen… is obsessively preoccupied with her brutally candid mirror.’ Another piece she drew inspiration from was Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian…
